- India confirms more than 68 new coronavirus cases, one of them with a travel history to UK
- Maharashtra, the worst hit among states, reports 10 new cases
Ten people have died and 557 have tested positive for Covid-19 in the country as of Tuesday, with the country’s northeast region reporting its first positive case.
India recorded more than 68 new cases of Covid-19 and one of them was a 23-year-old from Manipur who had a travel history to the UK. The patient is stable and is under observation, officials said.
Maharashtra, the worst hit among states that have reported Covid-19 cases, reported 10 new cases on Tuesday, taking the state’s total positive cases to 107.
Kerala reported 14 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking its total to 105, while Karnataka, where the virus is spreading, recorded eight more cases on Tuesday, taking the total in the state to 41.
Covid-19 cases have also also been reported in Telangana, where the total stands at 35, including 10 foreigners. Delhi, where no case had been recorded for the past 40 hours, reported two fresh cases on Tuesday, while Rajasthan recorded five more cases. Tamil Nadu also recorded three cases, while Andhra Pradesh recorded one case today totaling it to eight.
“The Centre is monitoring the progress with respect to states having earmarked hospitals dedicated for Covid-19 cases. Manufacturers have also been identified domestically and procurement has been initiated to ensure that there is no shortage of personal protective equipment, N95 masks and other protective equipment needed by doctors to carry out their duties,” said Lav Aggarwal, joint secretary, ministry of health and family welfare.
The government also said that it is in touch with various organisations such as the Defence Research Development Organisation and Bharat Electrical Ltd for considering the use of indigenous ventilators such as those made by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
The government on Tuesday said that 118 laboratories have been included in the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR’s) network of Covid-19 testing facilities, with a capacity to test 12,000 samples per day.
Furthermore, 22 private lab chains have registered with ICMR till 24 March 2020 for Covid-19 testing.
They have 15,500 collection centres nationwide.
“Out of 15 kit manufacturers, National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune has approved three PCR based kits and one antibody detection kit. One of these is an Indian manufacturer,” Aggarwal said.
“It is the need of the hour that all the people who are either in home or facility quarantine, need to maintain strict vigil, and practice the laid down protocols of social distancing, and personal hygiene. Special care needs to be taken of the elderly, pregnant women and small children,” said Harsh Vardhan, Union minister of health and family welfare who reviewed the situation on Tuesday.
As on date, cumulatively, 187,904 people are under surveillance and 35,073 have completed 28 days observation period as on Tuesday. “It is absolutely essential that surveillance and contact tracing of all positive cases is taken up and no suspected or high-risk person is left out,” Cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba on Tuesday wrote to the chief secretaries of states, asking them to break the spread of Covid-19 through community transmission.
